The Audi A3 is one of the most popular compact premium cars, and still dominates despite the introduction of previously non-existent rivals like the BMW 1-Series and Volvo C30. Relatively roomy and with class-leading build quality the second-generation A3 is a desirable first step on the premium car ladder. Transmission choices include a five-speed manual on less powerful models, or a six-speed on more powerful versions. Both shift smoothly, although the clutch pedal feels a little numb. Some versions have the option of DSG (double shift gearbox) which offers all the benefits of an automatic, with smooth gearshifts, plus the fuel economy of a manual. It turns in neatly and can be guided precisely on twisty roads. The limited body roll experienced when cornering is reined in further if sports suspension has been chosen from the options list (S-line and Sport models have lowered suspension as standard). All models come with electronic stability control fitted as standard, which can help correct a car's line during a skid. It's confident and inspiring - just like a sports hatch should be. But it's easy to drive, too, simple to park and happy in town. The ride is much improved over the old model. It's supple over all surfaces and cruises without complaint on the motorway. On fast A and B roads, it shows superb grip and has precise steering and a pleasing gear change. There’s a good amount of space for passengers and luggage. The A3's minimum boot capacity of 350 litres is fairly average for a family hatchback, though this does extend to more than 1000 litres up to roof height. The roomy rear-seats make lengthy journeys a little more tolerable. Parking isn’t too difficult, but low-speed manoeuvres are aided by its tidy turning circle. There’s lots of safety kit and plenty of subliminal luxury (like soundproofing) Standard equipment on all models includes ABS brakes with EBD, power steering and electric heated door mirrors. A3 buyers are treated to a high quality cabin and plenty of space. The driver's seat and steering wheel offer a good range of adjustment, while the materials in the cabin look and feel refined. Audi interiors are often used as benchmarks for quality by other manufacturers and the A3 feels just as well put together as a £40,000 Audi A6. All cars are stuffed with electronic safety gadgets and it’s got a strong body, too. The spec includes front seatbelt pretensioners, as well as driver, passenger, side body, head and knee airbags. All models also have an alarm/immobiliser and remote central locking with deadlocks, too. As a result, A3 receives a four-star Euro NCAP rating. As it’s an Audi, anything other than perfect will be seen as a failure. Thankfully, the interior is superbly screwed-together and shouldn’t give owners any niggles or problems. Overall, Audis have that stereotypically excellent German build quality, so we see no reason to expect things to be any different here.
