Alhambra is related to both the Volkswagen Sharan and Ford Galaxy. It's a sound package - after all, it's built alongside Sharan in Portugal and shares the same proven VW engines. It's just as nimble and car-like to drive as Galaxy/Sharan, with good use of the flexible interior space. If you can live without the VW badge, what tips the balance in Alhambra's favour is its value for money. New or used - you get more car for your money, and specifications are more generous, too. The original engine line-up consisted of a pair of 1.9 turbo diesels with 115bhp or 130bhp - both have plenty of pull, are tolerably refined and suit the Alhambra's people carrying role. All models have six-speed gearboxes. The airy, spacious cabin has quality fittings and trim, and a classy finish. The seats are comfortable and supportive. Even the third-row seats will accommodate adults. The middle-row seats slide to vary legroom for the second and third rows. All of the rear seats fold and can be removed to give a huge load area. Like Sharan and Galaxy. All have a six-speed manual gearbox. S has air-conditioning, tinted glass, electric front windows, remote central locking and a stereo, 16in alloy wheels, climate control, electric rear windows, cruise control, leather trimmed steering wheel and gear knob, on-board computer and sports suspension, also adds two integrated child seats and cruise control. Soft-touch plastics, blue backlit dials and attractive seat fabrics help contribute to a pleasing driving environment. There's lots of seat adjustment and the steering wheel adjusts for reach and height, so it's easy to get a comfortable, car-like driving position. It has good all-round visibility. Driver, passenger and side airbags are standard on all versions. Alarm, deadlocks, remote central locking and immobiliser are standard across the range. There should be few reliability issues with Alhambra thanks to VW engineering and good build quality.
