Latest Passat models build on their reputation for high standards of quality, and still rank amongst the best choices in this class. Revised rather than completely re-designed, to keep it ahead of rivals such as Mondeo. Changes to the bodywork include new lights both front and rear, a larger corporate grille and flashings of chrome, while there is the choice of excellent petrol and diesel units. This includes the satisfyingly swift TDI PD 130. Choose from eight engines. If you're covering a lot of miles, choosing a diesel should be a no-brainer. They're quick, smooth, refined and swift. And they'll cover massive mileages before needing a serious overhaul. Our favourite is the 1.9 TDi 130bhp. It's an able motorway-mile-muncher and can cruise well. Impressive level of legroom - it's capable of transporting four in comfort and five for a short while. The seats are comforting and supportive and the cabin is well insulated against noise. The load area is easy to access and can be quickly expanded thanks to split/fold rear seats; as large as its main rivals. Interior storage is good. Generous sprinkling of toys on top of all the basics you'd expect - all models get air con, four electric windows, multi-function computer, traction control and radio/cassette with eight speakers. The dash layout is sensible and logical, and the overall feel, especially in the higher spec models, is of a high grade of luxurious motoring. This is where the VW badge hints that it can play with the prestige marques. A sturdy car with four airbags as standard, ABS, brake assist and electronic stability systems, it is built with safety in mind. Security as standard is an immobiliser and interior protection alarm. The build quality of Volkswagens is hard to beat in this sector - it's first class and won't let you down. Similarly the engine and mechanicals are well constructed.
