The Mercedes-Benz SLK is a feel-good convertible. Every one of its engines is a pleasure to drive, it looks stunning and has a party-piece in its folding metal roof. Inside it’s well built, comfortable and well equipped. As a result it’s been a hit for Mercedes-Benz, used prices have stayed high and there’s a waiting list for anyone wanting to buy new. But it’s worth it. Only the Porsche Boxster and – more recently – the Cayman come close as an all-round package. With so many great engines on offer, the only choice buyers need to make is how much power to go for. The 350 offers smooth performance and a thrilling exhaust note. As expected it's blisteringly quick, with 60mph achievable in 5.3 seconds. When it comes to driving, the SLK is one of the best you can buy. It's agile, quick and - most importantly - a real blast to drive. It also offers something for everyone. Drivers who prefer to take things easy will appreciate that it cruises with ease, is unruffled with the roof down and is a doddle to drive around town. Those who prefer to push a bit harder will find that the SLK corners flatly, has a precise gear change and has plenty of grip. You can even choose between 'Comfort' and 'Sport' modes at the push of a button. Select 'Sport' and the throttle is sharpened. The metal folding roof is well insulated and lined – it’s so snug inside that you wouldn’t be able to tell that you were driving a drop-top in winter. The roof opens (or closes) at the push of a button in 22 seconds. For a couple, the SLK offers reasonable practicality - especially for a roadster. There's a decent-sized boot (although it's more restricted with the roof down) and there's a reasonable amount of room inside. It's possible to pack a couple of weekend bags and still have the roof down. A clean-looking and user-friendly cockpit. The buttons and switches are well placed and click satisfyingly into place. Two-stage airbags for driver and passenger plus head and thorax side bags and seatbelt force limiters are all standard fit as is the sophisticated traction and braking control system. So far very few problems reported at all. The roof is a complex mechanism, but very few problems were reported with the predecessor. It's covered by 30-year break down assistance if anything should go wrong.
